Cookware FAQ

The SMEG Cookware range is made of cold-forged aluminium with a non-stick coating and steel handles. A stainless steel bottom is applied to the aluminium body, which makes them compatible with induction hobs. Lastly, the matching lids are made of tempered heat-resistant glass. All materials comply with the requirements of current food contact materials regulations.

The non-stick coating of the SMEG Cookware, like the more traditional coatings available on the market, also contains PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which is more commonly known as Teflon™. PTFE is a cold, heat and chemical resistant synthetic polymer. This coating material guarantees excellent long-lasting non-stick performance.

The non-stick coatings are applied to the cookware in layers. The first layer adheres to the metal surface of the pan. The second non-stick PTFE layer provides resistance to scratches and abrasion, while the last layer gives the pots and pans the non-stick surface that makes it easier to clean them and to cook food by limiting the need for oils and fats.

The coating is inert; it does not react chemically with food, water or detergents and is therefore completely safe. Even if it were to be accidentally ingested, it would be eliminated naturally without being absorbed by the body. PTFE has been approved for use in kitchen utensils that come into contact with food by the competent health authorities in Europe, the United States, China (EFSA, FDA etc.) and other countries. The non-stick polymer is safe and is therefore widely used in the medical field.

Using scratched pots and pans does not pose a health risk, but it is recommended that you replace them as their non-stick function will no longer perform at its best.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a polymer used to make coatings of kitchen utensils non-stick. It is more commonly known as Teflon™. PFOA is a chemical substance that was used in the past as an additive for the production of PTFE. For some time (since 2010), it has no longer been used for the production of raw materials used to make non-stick coatings. The coatings are therefore PFOA-free.

In 2017, PFOA was added to the REACH regulation list of substances and transferred to POP Regulation Annex I in 2020. Since then, throughout Europe, the maximum limit of PFOA in substances and finished products has been set at 25 ppb (parts per billion). This is why, as of 4 July 2020, any "PFOA free" statements on products or packaging are considered misleading by the authorities as they are deemed to be "Self-evident advertising". Consequently, to comply with these regulations, Smeg products do not include a "PFOA free” claim. However, the products comply with current regulations in the various markets and the migration of PFOA is certified to be below detectable limits.

PFAS refers to a very broad group of chemicals, some of which are used as emulsifiers that enable fluoropolymer-based non-stick coatings to be produced industrially. During the cookware manufacturing process, the non-stick coating is sintered in an oven at a high temperature (about 430 °C). At this temperature, most of these substances evaporate, while the remaining amount becomes set in the PTFE and cannot be released into the food. It should be emphasized that the use of PFAS as additives for high temperature (> 280 °C) sintered fluoropolymer coatings intended for contact with food, is authorised by the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority).

Before the first use, wash the cookware with soapy water, boil some water and then dry it. Grease the entire cooking surface with a tablespoon of edible oil or fat.

It is recommended to use wooden, plastic or silicone kitchen utensils. Store the cookware carefully in order to protect the non-stick coating. Do not use sharp metal utensils and do not cut food inside the cookware to avoid scratching the non-stick layer and voiding the warranty.

Yes, the SMEG Cookware range is compatible with glass-ceramic, induction and electrical resistance or halogen hobs. Before starting to cook, make sure that the base of the cookware is clean as residues of dirt could scratch the surface of the hobs. When moving the cookware from one heating element to another, do not slide it across the hob; lift it to avoid scratching the surface. When using cookware on induction hobs, we recommend that you do not preheat an empty pan, as this may damage the non-stick coating.

 It is normal to hear noises coming from the cookware during heating or cooling. These cracking noises are due to settling between the two different types of metal that make up the bottom of the cookware. This does not indicate a malfunction or a fault and does not affect performance.

Yes, both components can be used in the oven up to 250°C / 480°F. However, you should make sure that the lid is intact and free from cracks. Avoid subjecting the glass lid to sudden temperature variations.

Yes, unless you wish to add oils and fats to flavour the preparation, the Smeg Cookware range allows you to cook without oils or fats. Do not use cooking oil sprays as they may leave residues that can alter the non-stick properties of the cookware.

Yes, it can be used at high temperatures and in the oven up to 250°C / 480°F, well above typical cooking, roasting and frying temperatures, without the risk of deterioration or damage to the coating. Consider that: Water boils at 100°C; the normal temperatures used to brown meat range from 200 to 240°C; the highest temperatures used to cook dishes in an oven are around 230°C. It is important to know that the maximum recommended cooking temperature for preserving the nutritional properties of food in the absence of liquids, such as grilling, is 250°C. However, you should remember that cookware should never be left unattended or heated empty on the heat source as they could reach much higher temperatures very quickly. We recommend heating non-stick pans at medium or low temperatures.

Although they may be unsightly, small scratches do not affect the performance of the product and do not mean that it has to be replaced. Deep scratches however, can affect the performance of the non-stick coating and the user should consider replacing the pan.

To keep the cookware in perfect condition and looking at its best, it is recommended that you wash it by hand using a non-abrasive sponge. Nevertheless, all the models and the various colours of the Cookware line can be washed in a dishwasher. In this case, we recommend using non-aggressive detergents and Eco and low temperature cycles. Remember that using a dishwasher does not affect the performance of the cookware, but it may alter the original colour of the externally painted or uncoated parts.

The product should be cleaned after each use to remove the film of grease that deposits on the surface. If not cleaned thoroughly, the film of grease may not be completely removed and the next time the pan is used it will leave visible stains.

No, the non-stick coating can only be applied during the manufacturing process.

The steel parts may yellow slightly over time or if the product is subjected to high temperatures, for example in an oven. It is recommended to use readily available special creams for cleaning the steel parts. For safety and for best results, we recommend using the Smeg CREMA INOX polishing cream. Contact an authorised service centre to find out if it is available in your country.
