Vittorio Bertazzoni Sr founds Smeg (Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla) in Guastalla, near Reggio Emilia in Italy.

Production of cookers begins, reaching its peak with the presentation of the first Smeg brand cooker, Elisabeth, in 1956.

The company presents Leda, the first Smeg branded washing machine, thanks to an increase in production capacity to include laundry appliances.

Niagara is released, the world’s first 14-place setting dishwasher, meeting modern requirements for large wash capacities.

Production of built-in appliances such as ovens and hobs begins; these products will become part of the defining elements of Smeg’s success.

Franco Maria Ricci, one of Italy’s most illustrious publishers and graphic designers, creates the Smeg logo which incorporates references to the burners of a gas hob and the round knobs of an oven.

Smeg sponsors the Ferrari Formula 1 team that runs with J. Villeneuve at that time.

Smeg began to manufacture professional ovens for Cafés, Delicatessens and Restaurants in 1982. This was followed by the production of professional dishwashers. 

In 1985, the Smeg Instruments division opened, dedicated to the world of hospitals, as well as medical and dental laboratories.

Instinctively and incisively understanding new consumer requirements for more elegant products, the company begins working with architect Guido Canali to create ovens and hobs.

Smeg’s collaboration with important designers continues, with the company offering ovens and hobs designed by architect Mario Bellini.

The company begins working with architect Renzo Piano, a collaboration which will lead to the production of hobs, ovens, fridges and the Smeg home garden.

The FAB range of fridges is created, a product line destined to become an international style icon and status symbol.

Guido Canali designs the Smeg Headquarters, for which he receives an honourable mention at the Milan Triennale’s “medaglia d’Oro all’Architettura Italiana” architectural awards in 2006.

Smeg celebrates its 60th anniversary and presents products designed alongside Marc Newson, which leads to winning the Wallpaper Design Award the following year.

Smeg and Italia Independent contaminate the icons of the past to produce a new style icon: the FAB28 denim fridge.
This is how the first fridge to be entirely covered in denim came into being. Not just any fridge, not the usual type of jeans.

2013

SMEG500, a fridge which looks like a Fiat 500 car, born from an exciting collaboration between Fiat 500 and Smeg.

It's an exclusive project which brings together two brands synonymous with the world of vintage styledesign and technological know how, in a brand new guise.

2014

Smeg launches the small domestic appliances line designed by Deepdesign studio and immediately wins the Good Design award once again, as well as the iF Design Award and Red Dot Design Award.

2016

Smeg teams up with Dolce&Gabbana to create Frigorifero d’arte collection, a special edition of 100 FAB28 hand-decorated by Sicilian artists.
In the same year the products of the new Dolce Stil Novo line are presented, the innovative aesthetic characterized by an elegant black glass, to which the Portofino kitchen stands out with its vigorous colors.

2017

During the Milan Design Fair, Salone del Mobile di MilanoSmeg and Dolce&Gabbana unveiled their latest collaboration – Sicily is my Love. The Sicily is my Love collection, is enriched with new pieces made on an industrial scale, through a process of reproduction of hand-painted prototypes created by master Sicilian artists. Like the FABs, the small appliances are also adorned with Dolce&Gabbana’s signature decorative style.

2018

Dolce&Gabbana and Smeg continue the journey that join their artistic sensibilities  to celebrate the authentically ‘Made in Italy’ project under the shared standard of creativity, art, and design. Divina Cucina is a combination of precious kitchen appliances which are the fruit of Smeg’s longstanding experience in the design appliances sector.Divina cucina has been designed in 2 aethetic line: one inspired by the decoration of the Sicilian Cart, and one inspired by the mediterranean Maiolica ceramics.

2019

The Vitality System and SmegConnect are introduced to the range and collaborate with Disney to create Mickey Mouse special edition FAB.

In the same year Smeg announces the acquisition of La Pavoni, an historical company in the production of domestic and professional coffee machines.

2020

Smeg introduces its first cookware collection designed by the studio from Milan @deepdesign by Raffaella Mangiarotti and Matteo Bazzicalupo and entirely Made in Italy.
