Artist

Roberto Caputo

Roberto Caputo was born in 1967 in Barrafranca, in the province of Enna. He began painting at just 10 years old, and has since become an accomplished self-taught artist. Over the years he has developed and expressed his creativity by experimenting with a variety of techniques and styles. His canvases recount his homeland, Sicily, with the narrow streets, monuments and warm colours of the Mediterranean inland. Since 2005 he has operated an art studio with an adjacent workshop for the restoration of Sicilian carts. Many of his works belong to private collections both in Italy and abroad.

Opera

The Sicilian cart between folklore and myth

Enamel and oil, 60 x 151 x 68.2 cm The imagery that adorns the surfaces of this refrigerator originates from popular Sicilian beliefs in superstition and mythology. Painted on the front is the horse that pulls the cart, bedecked with armiggi (traditional harnesses with mirrors), cianciane (little bells), giummi (pom-poms) and colourful ribbons. On the left panel is the image of the siren, the enchantress who leads men to ruin by drawing them into the unknown. The eternal battle between good and evil is reproduced on the right side with the figure of the archangel Michael defeating a demon. The golden eagle that appears on both sides symbolises spiritual elevation and the afterlife. The sun on the top, surrounded by white, red and yellow rays, is an emblem of vigour and rebirth.
