Smeg Group Environmental Policy

Vision and objectives

Protecting the environment and people, together with product excellence based on the integration of advanced technology and distinctive design, are the values that guide the Smeg Group. These principles are translated into process and design choices aimed at the constant mitigation of environmental impacts generated throughout the entire value chain, forming the foundation of this Environmental Policy.
The Smeg Group has embarked on a path of increasing commitment to environmental sustainability, aware of its impacts, as well as the risks and opportunities associated with the environmental dimension, and with the intention of defining ambitious objectives.
This Environmental Policy is intended to support and guide this commitment by providing a shared reference framework for the entire Group, in line with international environmental frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the ISO 14001 standard , and the Paris Agreement.

Scope of application and dissemination

As defined in Smeg’s Code of Ethics and in compliance with the Organisational Model 231 , the Group is committed to protecting the environment at every stage of its activities. For this reason, this policy applies to the entire Group and concerns all phases of procurement, design, production, logistics and sales, and therefore extends to each company site, including:

  • production sites;
  • logistics sites;
  • offices, including commercial subsidiaries.

The policy applies throughout the entire value chain, taking into account the risks, impacts and opportunities associated both with the Group’s direct activities and with indirect activities developed within relationships with partners not subject to direct control, such as suppliers, service providers, contractors and other strategic business partners, who are encouraged to adopt the principles set out herein. The policy is made available to all internal and external stakeholders - such as employees, suppliers, customers and the wider community - via Smeg’s website.

Environmental priorities

In addition to what is specified in the Quality, Environment, Health and Safety Policy, the Smeg Group identifies the following environmental priorities, together with their respective intents, to foster proactive and responsible environmental management.

Climate Change: to actively contribute to the global strategy against climate change by monitoring its carbon footprint and defining climate targets; developing projects aimed at reducing environmental impacts across the product life cycle; collaborating with supply chain stakeholders, particularly suppliers; carrying out internal training and awareness activities focused on energy saving; and ensuring rigorous and transparent communication to stakeholders.

Circular Economy: to adopt eco-design principles to extend product lifetime, facilitate maintenance, improve energy efficiency and technical performance, prioritise recyclable components and those that support disassembly and end-of-life recovery, and collaborate with partners that ensure virtuous management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) aimed at increasing recycling rates.

Biodiversity: to promote the protection and enhancement of biodiversity and natural capital, with a view to preserving territories, promoting balance among the different components of the ecosystem and increasing the landscape’s regenerative capacity through dedicated afforestation actions, conservation of agricultural biodiversity and monitoring.

Hazardous Substances: to reduce the ecological footprint of products, with particular attention to limiting substances considered potentially harmful, in full compliance with European directives and regulations as well as the Group’s internal regulations , also through rigorous collaboration with its suppliers.

Water Consumption: to reduce the environmental impact arising from the use of water resources in all production phases, ensuring continuous monitoring and constant risk assessment. Particular attention is also devoted to the entire product life cycle, with the aim of limiting water use especially during the use phase.

Governance and continuous commitment

Oversight of the commitments set out in this Policy, in terms of implementing environmental management activities and improving performance, is ensured by the Sustainability Committee, which provides updates to the Board of Directors and top management. Responsibility for monitoring environmental performance lies with the Sustainability Coordinator, who in turn informs the Sustainability Committee.
This Policy will be subject to periodic reviews and may be updated to ensure its continued adequacy and alignment with regulatory developments as well as international best practices.
