Kunstenaar

Fratelli Bevilacqua

Ceramica Bevilacqua is a family-run artisan workshop based in inland Sicily, Caltanissetta. Since 1997, artists Antonio and Giuseppe, who are also brothers, have sought inspiration in Sicilian majolica and the island’s traditional decorations. Yet, all their work is extremely recognisable and bears their personal touch. Amphorae, vases, plates and clocks are only some of the marvellous pieces produced. All the creations by the Bevilacqua brothers are dominated by bright yellow, intense blue, emerald green and deep black, representing the Sicilian sun, sea, hills and the lava on Mount Etna.

Rinaldo and the magic helmet of Mambrino

Enamel and oil, 60 x 151 x 68.2 cm The decorations of this refrigerator are inspired by the Sicilian tradition of cart painting, which in turn has its roots in the puppet theatre productions of the exploits of the paladins of France. The front panel features a particularly engaging episode: Rinaldo killing Mambrino to take possession of the magic helmet. Painted on the sides are various scenes: Saint George, protector of knights, slaying the dragon; a pair of duelling knights; two medallions with the effigies of kings and paladins. All the scenes are embellished with colourful geometric motifs. The top is adorned with the profile of a knight.
